The long middle of the trip, measured in lunches that went on too far into the afternoon.

Setting out

Where it began

The fast train put Paris behind us in a morning, and Nice delivered us to the girls and to Mum — the week the whole trip was arranged around.

The heart of it

The middle of it

The farmhouse ran on long lunches under the plane tree, the house dog supervising, and days out through the ochre villages — Les Baux, Roussillon, and the Carrières des Lumières, where Picasso met us for the second time on this trip, projected forty feet high with the girls walking through him.

An aside

Alain had told us about the markets at Antibes. Alain was right.

In their words

What people said

The best of what was said at the time, tidied only enough to read.

“Catching up with Mum at the farmhouse — quite a special trip, that week.”
